Your Law Firm's Operating History Could Be Worth $100K–$5M

AI labs are spending billions learning how real businesses run — and a law firm's operations are some of the richest training material there is. Through Mode Inc's business data program, established firms license an agreed copy of their de-identified operational records, keep their originals, and get paid. The published program range is $100K–$5M per company, set by Mode's review of each firm's scale and history.

This page explains what that actually involves for a law firm — including the confidentiality question every managing partner asks first.

Why AI Labs Want to Learn How a Law Firm Runs

The value is not your clients' stories. It's your firm's operating logic — the workflows your people have refined over years:

  • Matter workflows — how a matter moves from intake and conflict check through drafting, review, and filing
  • Document patterns — how documents are assembled, revised, and finalized across practice areas
  • Practice operations — calendaring and deadline management, billing and collections cycles, staffing and utilization patterns

AI systems learn from sequence and structure: how work actually flows through a professional firm, in what order, with what checks. A firm that has run thousands of matters has, without trying, built a deep record of that logic. That record is what gets licensed — de-identified, and limited to the scope your firm agrees with Mode.

Years of Records Are the Asset

A single busy year is data. A decade of it is a curriculum. Firms with several years of operating history across their case management, document, and billing systems hold exactly the longitudinal record AI labs can't manufacture — real workflows, through real volume, across real seasons of work.

You don't build anything new. The history already exists in the systems you run every day.

You License a Copy. You Keep Everything.

Licensing is not selling your firm or handing over your files:

  • Your originals stay with you, untouched — your team keeps working exactly as it does now
  • Mode licenses an agreed copy of operational records, de-identified before use
  • The scope is agreed with Mode before anything is exported — nothing moves that your firm hasn't reviewed and approved in the agreement

Who Qualifies

Mode's published eligibility for the program:

  • Law firms: 10 or more employees
  • Located in the US, Canada, UK, or Australia
  • An established practice — several years of operating records strengthens a firm's fit

How the Process Works

Apply → Review → LOI → Agree & Export → Deliver → Get Paid

Mode states a timeline of roughly 3 months from the first conversation to payment. That's Mode's stated process timeline — where a specific firm lands inside it depends on the review and the scope agreed.

FAQ

Is this our client files or privileged material?

No. What's licensed is operational records — how matters move, how documents are produced, how the practice runs — de-identified and limited to a scope your firm agrees with Mode in writing before any export. Privilege and client confidentiality are legitimate board-level questions, and they belong in that agreement review: the firm defines what's in scope, and firms should involve their own ethics counsel in reviewing the terms. Nothing is taken first and negotiated later.

Do we give up ownership of our data?

No. You license an agreed copy. Your originals stay in your systems, and your firm keeps using them exactly as it does today.

How much will our firm actually receive?

Mode's published program range is $100K–$5M per company. Where a firm lands in that range is determined by Mode's review — firm scale, years and depth of operating records, and the systems in use. No one can honestly quote your firm a figure before that review, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does.

How long does the whole process take?

Mode states roughly 3 months from the first conversation to payment. Treat that as their stated timeline for the process, not a guaranteed date — scope and review drive the actual pace.

What does it cost the firm to participate?

Nothing out of pocket for the review. Mode pays the company for the license. If you were introduced by a FiftyKPlug affiliate, that affiliate's fee is paid by Mode as well — never by your firm.
